Reverse Engineering (RE) is a more efficent way of product development. Reverse engineering is not just "copy". Normally, RE includes following steps: sample 3D digitizing (Scanning/CMM) - data editing/processing - CAD modeling - post process (which can be modification/improvement or similation). There are cases that reverse engineering can play critical role for product development, analysis/testing. For competitor analysis, people buy a sample product from the market and RE the sample then do analysis/simulation and find out the competitor's advantages. Based on this information, people make changes or improvement on their own product. For cases of classical parts that no longer in production, RE helps also. RE technology is also the key step for new car development. From concept sketch (2D hand drawing) to clay model and then digitize the clay model with laser scanning systems. After the 3D dimensional data of the model is collected, developers can then make changes or do simulation on their computers. RE helps shorter the development cycle a lot.
